The coast is a favourite subject for the felt pieces and many are inspired by rough seas or deserted beaches. The hand made felt is often further embellished with needle felting to add different fabrics and details and the resulting pieces are intended to create a mood and atmosphere. Everyone sees something different depending on their own personal experiences and each piece of felt is truly unique. More recent pieces have included cutting, stitching and reassembling the felt to create a stronger contrast and more definite line between different shapes. Machine stitching is often then used to create further definition and texture to each piece.
'Blue Beach' is one of a series of pieces created from studies of the forms and textures found whilst walking on the sand; the patterns of the seaweed on pebbles, the ripples left by the sea. Hand dyed felt has been machine stitched to manipulate into ridges and curves whilst fabric and thread inclusions add another layer and texture.
